The world of Mark Ludy

I thought we should take a short break from this month’s theme of Halloween books and pumpkin/squash recipes. This way I could share with you a wonderful book I found, The Flower Man by Mark Ludy. I attended a gourmet food expo in Denver last month and on my way out had a short conversation with the Mark who happens to live in Windsor, Colorado about a half an hour’s drive north of my home. He also runs the Loodles coffee house where my writer’s group occasionally meets.
This amazingly illustrated, wordless story is told visually from beginning to end. There are no words, except for the very first page. A wordless book would be a nice break for kids who are reluctant readers. Yet the book is so fascinating that it should encourage any child to foster a love of books.
It features a small, meek man - the Flower Man - who transforms a small town. Mark moves the story along through the use of color. As the book description says, “The characters’ stories are woven together to create a tale that spans borders and nationalities and will refresh the human spirit with principles of compassion, honesty, integrity, and generosity.”
Because of the book’s amazing detail, The Flower Man will be enjoyed time and time again by both adults and children. Every time you look at it, you’ll find things you had not seen before. Children will also love searching for Squeakers the mouse, hidden on every page of the book.
Mark has written and/or illustrated several other books that I recommend you check out.
