Come On Mom!

From Lobster Press comes Come on, Mom! It features 75 activities mothers and daughters can do together like making perfume or bread-dough clay to playing radio reporter or playing goofy golf. Each activity includes easy-to-follow instructions and a materials list if supplies are needed. This girls-only guide will create memories that will last. For girls ages 3 to 9 and their moms.

Not to fear, there’s a father/son version, too - Come on, Dad!: 75 Things for Fathers and Sons to Do Together. For boys ages 3 to 9 and their dads, sample activities include Personal Pizzas, Paper Air Force, Time Capsule, Family Story Collection, Math Olympics, Obstacle Race, Recycled City, Personal Place Mats, and Backyard Camp Out.

Not only are these books great for parents, they’ll be helpful for new stepparents, volunteers in big brother/big sister type programs, and babysitters.

I like how these books have their share of pretend play, physical activity, mental activities, and cooking. Speaking of cooking, another great activities to do with your kids on your next camping trip is to make Campfire Pies. Grilling dessert over the campfire? Sounds like wholesome family fun.

Campfire Pie?

pie-iron-cookbook I learned about campfire pies from my local newspaper - Campfire Pies: Whatever you call them, they make a great outdoors treat. Basically, campfire pies (also called toasties, mountain pies, hobo pies, pie shams, pudgies and jaffles) are a hot pocket of bread or dough with something yummy in the middle – sweet or savory it’s all good. They’re made in a pie iron over a roaring campfire. There are all sorts of pie irons out there and even a website devoted to them – The Fire Pie Trail Store.

I really like the Rome double pie iron because you can make two sandwiches at once. Their Pie Iron Cookout Set comes with a round and square pie iron (singles) and the Pie Iron Recipe Cookbook. Sounds like something I have to get before our next camping trip.

GreatCamps.com is a great resource for campfire pie recipes. They even have an ongoing Pie Iron Contest to win a Rome’s Original # 1705 Square Pie iron. The Webmaster decides the favorite winning recipe, and two winners will be chosen yearly. The only rules are that recipes must be original and submitted by this form.

A Basic Pie Iron Recipe

Ingredients:

  1. double cast iron pie iron Pie Crust (twp pieces of thick bread could be used as well)

Directions:

  1. Cut enough pie crust to make several pies and place waxed paper between the crusts.
  2. Place them in a gallon zip lock bag and take them camping with us, keeping them cold. Any left over at the end of the weekend can be frozen until next time they are needed.
  3. Spray pie iron with Pam Cooking Spray and place a crust on each side. Fill with your favorite pie filling, close the iron and trim the crust on the outside.
  4. Bake over hot coals on a grill that is about 5-6″ above the coals.
  5. Watch carefully, check often and turn as needed, they will cook in about 10-15 minutes at the most.
