Videos and books for the holidays: Space, astronauts, and Fly Me to the Moon in 3D

Fly Me to the Moon was created by Summit Entertainment as the first ever animated 3D movie. It was released as a DVD this week, just in time for holiday shopping.
The movie is about Nat, a young housefly who is looking for adventure. He and two friends, I.Q. and scooter, come up with a plant to hitch a ride aboard Apollo 11 on its historic journey to the moon. As their families watch at home, the three flies become the first insects ever to journey into space. They also save the flight by repairing a potentially disastrous mechanical problem.
O.K., if you’re an adult you’ll have to suspend a whole lot of belief for about 90 minutes. We all know that insects didn’t travel in spaceships, something that real astronaut Buzz Aldrin stresses in an afterword to Fly Me to the Moon.
But if you’re a child, you’ll enjoy the movie, its cute characters, and that “kids can do big things, too!” sense of wonder and adventure. Plus, it’s very cool to sit in the living wearing 3D classes.
Fly Me to the Moon can be seen in 2D or 3D if you buy the 3D version, and comes with two pairs of glasses. If your child wears glasses like me, have them put on the 3D glasses first, then their regular glasses. They’ll probably have to hold them, which is a pain, but it works better than the other way around. And yes, the 3D effects are out of this world.
